Memorial Day

Last night for Memorial Day, we had some friends coming over for dinner, and as I was setting the table with some red, white and blue placemats to be festive, I thought it would be meaningful to mark this day with Ebenezer stones.   It seemed like the perfect project to pull out to take some time to reflect and remember the ways over the past year that God has been faithful and has helped us.

I Samuel 7:12 says, “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Jeshanah, and named it Ebenezer; for he said, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”  Samuel was erecting a stone to remember God’s help, blessings and faithfulness after a difficult time of trial and hardship.  The word Ebenezer simply means “stone of help.” 

We had a bowl of rocks and a cup filled with Sharpie markers on the table, and at first our guests thought this was a curious table decoration.  I explained to them during dessert that each person around the table could pick one stone (or more) from the bowl and then we all were invited to reflect on ways we have been aware of God's presence and faithfulness in our lives in this last year and to pick a word to represent this memory to write on the stone.  


We have a large jar in which we have begun to collect our Ebenezer rocks that we have made over the years, and this jar is filled with stories as we have taken time at different points to recollect God’s help in our lives.  I love that this is a physical reminder to us of God’s faithfulness and love. 


 MaggieTerryn writes about this practice of making Ebenezer stones, “It’s really very easy to have something great happen and within a few weeks, months, or years, the significance of it might begin to fade.  And then something tough happens and it’s easy to think that nothing good ever happens in your life or dwell on how bad your newest tough “thing” might be.  These tangible reminders all together in one place can show you just how many protections and blessings you’ve been given. I would encourage you to do these for so many things.  Not just the massive life-changing stuff.  Because, really, at the end of the day, so many times, it is all the little things that add up to show you God’s hand in your life.”    

While there are many times in a year we might choose to get out our Sharpies and write on some stones for a time to remember God’s goodness, Memorial Day seems to be a perfect day to throw in this tradition. So thankful for a sweet time around our table with dear friends sharing life together.

St. Nicholas' Day 2015

St. Nicholas' Feast Day is December 6th, but it seems that as with holiday busyness and with a lot going on, some celebrations have to get extended or postponed.  Grace abounds this season. :)  So, we celebrated a couple days late with our annual secret St. Nicholas candy delivery. We covered little candy bars with these St. Nicholas' papers (instead of the traditional practice of baking St. Nicholas cookies) and delivered them to neighbor's doorsteps under the cover of the night.   (It's like "booing" around Halloween and dropping off May Day flowers in the spring.  We practically have one time each season to try to knock on neighbor's doors, leave a treat, and run like the wind trying not to get caught!)  There is a wonderful reflection on St. Nicholas  here  from a weekly blog that shares on art and faith.  I loved the benediction in the reflection:   "May God give us all a heart of mercy like St. Nicholas; eyes that see the needs

Taylor's Crossing

Our boy is turning 13 this month so we've been intentional about trying to create something that would fit his personality and that would speak to his heart to help mark this "crossing" year.  We did a more elaborate version of this for his sister, Anna, but he made it very clear that he did not want the same kind of  pageantry.   As we thought about how to tweak some of our ideas that we'd put in place before, we still had some of the same goals that we'd had for Anna.  The ultimate message that we wanted him to hear and remember was that he is loved. One small thing we did in preparation to drive this home was that we had him memorize Psalm 139 over a period of a few months as this passage is a beautiful reminder of God's love for us and His presence with us.   We also wanted Taylor to know that as he turned from 12 to 13 into the realm of being a teenager that he was not doing this alone. Rite of Passage

This text above deserves some background....  When Anna was in 6th grade or so, we went to a fabulous talk that Julie Metzgar gave at Children's Hospital about puberty.  The talk was presented under a program called "Great Conversations" and is tagged as one that is for "helping preteens and their families in conversations about body changes, sex and other growing-up stuff."   During one of the talks about girls getting their periods, Julie Metzgar showed slides of girls in villages around the world where the girls are honored and highly esteemed when they get their first periods.  This rite of passage  is celebrated as girls are preparing for their roles as women.  In some cultures, these celebrations are as lavish as weddings and they are significant markers for the young women and their families.  Rather than whisper about this behind closed doors and pretend that nothing has happened, Julie encouraged us to talk to our daughters about some
